About the Artist
Hi, I’m Gloria Provitola!
I reemerged as a unique voice in abstract digital art on January 1, 2023, after a long creative hiatus that began in the wake of 9/11. Born in New York City, I spent my early years between the bustling borough of Brooklyn, shaped by the post-WWII era, and the peaceful landscapes of pre-suburban Long Island.Art always called to me, but it wasn’t until my early twenties that pursuing it as a serious path became possible, despite numerous challenges. At 19, I moved alone to Manhattan during the turbulent 1960s. The city became my creative home, where I spent a great deal of time visiting galleries and museums.
I consider myself a self-taught outsider artist, driven by personal exploration rather than formal art training. My educational background reflects a wide-ranging curiosity: I earned a Master of Divinity with a focus on psychiatry and religion, and later studied acupuncture and Chinese herbology to receive an M.S.O.M. degree. This eclectic combination inspires my philosophy of "Qi Flows to Art," emphasizing the energetic forces that guide my creative process.
The tragedy of 9/11 caused me to pause my artistic work and led me to discard much of my previous art. In many ways, I felt as if my artistic life ended then. I continued to dabble, mainly through photography, but the rebirth of my art happened during the pandemic. Joining a Facebook photography group called Beauty in my Shelter eventually brought me into a daily art practice group. Committing to daily creation reignited my passion and served as a transformative catalyst, freeing me from traditional constraints and academic expectations.
A pivotal moment came on May 11, 2024, during a dramatic solar storm that illuminated the Earth with glowing auroras. This event inspired my “Windows” series of abstract digital paintings, evoking the vibrancy and translucency of stained glass. That breakthrough solidified my determination to explore the boundless possibilities of creative vision.
My artwork is shaped by two key themes. First, it explores the idea of ethereal beings inhabiting an ethereal world. Through investigations of light, shadow, and layered translucency, I seek to express the qi that permeates all existence. My work also reflects on the fluidity and artificiality of time, the power of transformation, the unpredictability of chaos, and the ever-changing nature of reality. Second, my work nods to psychedelia, science fiction, and the imaginative universes of Doctor Who, which inspire my journeys into multiversal creativity. Writers such as Kafka, and the magical realism of Murakami, Marquez, and Esquivel, further influence this direction.

Influences from artistic legends like Kandinsky, van Gogh, Klee, Schiele, O’Keeffe, Matisse, Dali, Magritte, Diebenkorn, Picasso, Kahlo, Basquiat, Lawrence, and Bearden resonate throughout my work. Yet, it is my personal belief that the mind flows with qi to art that truly defines my creations. This philosophy transforms the digital canvas into a realm of intuitive, nonverbal dialogue. Now, in 2026, I am launching a new chapter by returning to acrylic and mixed media, embracing the challenge of working without the immediate corrections allowed by digital tools.
As I navigate the path of art marketing independently, without affiliations to guilds or societies, my determination and innovative spirit promise to bring fresh energy to the contemporary art world. My journey serves as an invitation to emerging artists of all ages to unlock their creative potential and build a life enriched by artistic passion.
